Casual yet exciting, the Inner Loop West-Greenway Community provides as great a place to splurge on a high-end meal or catch your favorite band as to set down roots. But, for non-native H-towners, let’s clarify what the “inner loop” means. It simply refers to the area within the boundary created by the loop of Interstate 610. Within this section of the city, you can find a few smaller neighborhoods, all unique and all with reputations as wonderful places to live.


First, the Washington Avenue Coalition / Memorial Park neighborhood features new builds and some of the best green spaces anywhere in the city. Then, the Afton Oaks / River Oaks area, one of the oldest residential communities in Houston, is defined by mansions that look like architectural gems. Finally, there’s the Greenway / Upper Kirby area with its popular West Ave, a street bustling equally with entertainment and residential offerings.

Neighborhood Vibe

With beautiful, tree-lined streets and white-columned houses, this community takes pride in the block they live on, paying special attention to its appearance. Another sacred priority for Inner Loop West-Greenway Community residents? They shop at Urban Harvest’s Saturday Farmers Market, one of the most popular farmers’ markets in the city and a downright neighborhood weekend tradition. After hitting the stands for homemade jams and fresh-grown kale, folks who populate this area like to dig into their spoils with a picnic at Levy Park, a lively acreage filled with spots to hike, bike, and play with Fido.

Our Favorite Spots

The food scene in the Inner Loop West-Greenway Community will appeal to everyone, whether you crave Indian fusion from Pondicheri or sashimi from Kata Robata. Our favorite foodie spot, however, has to be Tony’s Restaurant, an Italian fine-dining institution where the pasta is made fresh and the steaks will melt in your mouth. Follow up the soppressata with a night out at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck, a performance venue that has hosted the country’s best up-and-comers and Americana music since it opened in 1990.

Things to Know

While the Inner Loop West-Greenway Community is only a 20-minute drive from the business district of Downtown Houston, when considering a move here, it is important — if not downright necessary — to have a car to make that commute. Also, when looking at renting or buying in this area, you should probably build in some flexibility with your budget, considering the popularity and beauty of this area, because housing rates lean towards the pricier side in comparison to the rest of the city.
