For a residential community that still maintains a bit of urban flair, it doesn’t get much better than Greater Heights. Sitting northwest of Downtown Houston, this neighborhood combines all the ease of the suburbs with a hip, trendy atmosphere that boasts some of the hottest places to go out in the Lone Star state. However, Greater Heights also balances its nightlife with quaint, tranquil natural spaces, such as T.C. Jester Park and Spotts Park, where residents can take joy in pedaling along bike trails or swimming laps in the public pool. This walkable neighborhood is full of both vintage Queen Anne and Victorian-style homes, as well as new high-end apartment buildings, which means you can find a home for any style on their tree-lined streets. An extra bonus? At a higher elevation than the rest of the city, the Greater Heights is more protected from flooding than any other Houston area.

Neighborhood Vibe

The sense of fellowship is particularly strong among the residents of Greater Heights, a place distinguished for its status as the first planned community in all of Texas. This neighborhood camaraderie reveals itself to anyone who has ever attended one of the area’s signature yearly events, which include White Linen Nights in the summer and Lights in the Heights in the winter. Another Greater Heights community tradition, and a true indication of the vibe of this place, goes down the first Saturday of every month at First Saturday Arts Market, an event featuring live music and a makers market.

Our Favorite Spots

With a massive number of restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues located here, the Greater Heights neighborhood presents some of the best places to spend a Saturday in all of Houston. One of our favorite restaurants to grab grub, Local Foods, serves their delicious crunchy chicken sandwich with a layer of potato chips for extra bite. An ideal night out in the Heights starts with a banana daiquiri at tiki bar Lei Low before getting your two-step on at White Oak Music Hall, whose line-up of acts is as impressive as their views of the Houston skyline.

Things to Know

Wherever you live in the Heights, it will never require more than a quick walk to a green space, the latest dining hot spot, or a place to grab a drink. However, a car may still be essential, although the area’s location within the Inner Loop makes it an easy trip to go shopping at the Galleria or take in the paintings in the Museum District. Also, considering all its conveniences and advantages, plenty of housing options crop up throughout Greater Heights. You can find anything from a brand-new apartment complex to an old bungalow to rent here.
