Great experience with great amenities in my apartment. The building manager/supervisor is extremely nice and friendly. It'd be nice for the building to actually have a doorman as there have been a few instances of sketchy people walking around, and a bike theft. Regardless, I feel very safe in this building and like the convenience of it being so close to public transportation that can either take me downtown, or to school in the morning. What do you like most: Amenities in apartment, Building manager, Convenient location. What do you like least: Lack of doorman.

This apartment was FANCY. It had beautiful new wood floors, new appliances and cabinets, sealed double-paned windows, new in-unit washer/dryer, and nice bathrooms. The view north toward the city and lake over the railroad tracks was expansive and gorgeous. I had a small metal balcony that was neat but unnerving to actually be out on. The unit had central air and heat, including humidity control, and an industrial/modern look. It also has a movie theater and bike lock area in the first floor. Parking is available (for fee, I think), which is rare for the neighborhood. The doormen were helpful and handled packages. The building itself is very elegant and beautifully maintained.
What did you like most?
I loved the central air and brand-new appliances best. Nothing was broken at all.
What did you like least?
I found that the high-up apartment kinda freaked me out when the weather got bad. Now I live on a second floor apartment in the trees and I'm more comfortable. I'm not from an area where concierges/doormen are common, and the whole dynamic weirded me out. Everything else about this apartment made life a dream.

This is one of few non-student high rise apartment buildings in Hyde Park that is not owned by MAC. Most units are rented-out condos, with some owned by the management company. The renovation of this building was done VERY well and each unit looks like it belongs in the South Loop (and you'd probably wind up paying much more per month to live in this exact building transplanted a few neighborhoods north). The building manager is friendly and present, but does have some odd rules. I'd say the gym in the building is pretty lacking (just a treadmill, bike, elliptical and some free weights put in to a room the size of a small bedroom), but there is indoor bike parking and a secure area to receive packages.
What did you like most?
The building is mostly occupied by professional students (lots of med students), UChicago staff members, and medical residents. It's VERY quiet, noise was never a concern. I also liked that it was well updated-- very modern fixtures and the updates are high quality (so, really high-end fixtures in the kitchens and bathrooms-- not just shiny new stuff that breaks easily).
What did you like least?
We did have a security incident at one time where packages were stolen from the mailroom. I feel it was handled well in that the building stepped up front door security afterward but it was unfortunate and did cause retrieving packages to be more difficult (after the incident, you had to sign out your packages with the building manager, and only when he was in the building, which was during the day when most people are at school/working).
